The end of classrooms? Blog profile
We have been learning through lectures for hundreds of years but is it the best method? There are many views on what constitutes the "best" method of teaching and, indeed, if there is such a thing. A recent study published by PNAS
suggests that "Active Learning" can be more effective than direct lecturing. Active Learning is where students have some interaction such as a group discussion or problem solving.
The study found that students taking traditional lectures were 1.5 times more likely to fail
than students engaged in Active Learning. That is not to say that Active Learning is better, or even that it is appropriate for all topics. It may simply suggest that learning is most effective when an appropriate delivery method is selected, perhaps taking into account the subject, the learning environment and the background of the students.
